Noah, a man of the soil, proceeded to plant a vineyard. When he drank some of its wine, he became drunk and lay uncovered inside his tent. Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father naked and told his two brothers outside. But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it across their shoulders; then they walked in backward and covered their father’s naked body. Their faces were turned the other way so that they would not see their father naked. When Noah awoke from his wine and found out what his youngest son had done to him, he said, “Cursed be Canaan! The lowest of slaves will he be to his brothers.”

Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?

Adam and Eve

  • Yahweh plants a garden.

  • Adam and Eve consume something, some fruit, with the bad consequences.

  • Adam and Eve are naked.

  • Adam and Eve receive clothing to cover their nakedness.

  • Adam and Eve’s eyes are opened and they perceive their nakedness.

Noah

  • Noah plants an orchard.

  • Noah consumes wine and becomes drunk.

  • Noah gets naked in his tent.

  • Noah’s nakedness is covered with a blanket.

  • Noah awoke from his sleep and perceives what has happened.

  1. In Pastor Harry’s 5/31/22 entry, Psalm 26, he brings up the issue of being accused although we are innocent. How do you deal with damage to your reputation? Pastor Harry suggests following the five principles for peace in persecution in Psalm 26. How will you apply these points to your current dilemma?

  2. In Impact Director, Kyle’s, 6/3/22 entry, Psalm 29, she reminds us that we don’t always hear God’s audible voice, but He is speaking in other ways... like, through thunder. She says, “Maybe today we can open our ears just a little bit further to His ‘...thunder [which] sets the oak trees dancing...’” (Psalm 29:9). Try reading this Psalm in different Bible versions. What is God saying to you?

Scriptures: Genesis 9:20-23; Genesis 3:1-9; Ephesians 5:1-22, 25

  1. What impacted or challenged you in today’s message?

  2. In Genesis 9, we learn that even Noah, a hero of the faith, has a few flaws - as do many others in the scriptures. What does God teach us here about our world’s penchant for perfection? How would admitting your own ‘achilles heal’ impact your relationships at home, in the workplace, etc.?

  3. Pastor Jared talked about having a family member who is at their worst, and asks about our response to them. What is your tendency: condemnation or grace? Why? Based on our choice, what hangs in the balance for the generations to come?

  4. In Genesis 1:27-28, God establishes a hierarchical order of the way families are supposed to work. How does this model teach you to be the “first one” to engage and seek reconciliation?

    3rd - Woman
    4th - Everything they had dominion over

  5. In the Adam & Eve story and the Noah story, the family structure breaks down and shame and blame enter in. Has this happened in your family line? Have you seen anyone be the first to stop trying to change a person, and offer grace instead? What would this look like if it were you?

  6. As you think about the struggles in your family, what did you think about Pastor Jared’s advice to step back and re-examine the role God wants you to play in it? What would it take for you to stop giving everything to be a better son/daughter/sibling, and instead point them to a better savior? Who has the power to change them?

  7. In the scriptures, God could have condemned, but He gave grace (His Son) instead. As a good neighbor, who will you start doing this for?

As tragic events unfold throughout our world, we give thanks that we have a good God and we know that He is faithful to help. As the song, Do Something, goes (by Matthew West), when our hearts are broken by the turmoil and we [shake our fists at Heaven and say], “God, why don’t you do something?” He answers with, “I did, yeah, I created you.” Join us in praying for all the people stepping up to help in the ways that they can. Comforting hurting families. Feeding the hungry. Caring for the ill. Sharing Jesus. Being a good neighbor.
