Fear God

Sermon Notes

Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
- Psalms 90:12

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. For through wisdom your days will be many, and years will be added to your life. If you are wise, your wisdom will reward you; if you are a mocker, you alone will suffer.
- Proverbs 9:10-12

One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.” Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom. Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
- Luke 23:39-43

“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone. While the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy? “Who shut up the sea behind doors when it burst forth from the womb, when I made the clouds its garment and wrapped it in thick darkness, when I fixed limits for it and set its doors and bars in place, when I said, ‘This far you may come and no farther; here is where your proud waves halt’? “Have you ever given orders to the morning, or shown the dawn its place.
- Job 38:4-12

Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.
- John 17:3

Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.
- Genesis 2:25

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
- Galatians 5:1

Wow! What a great message. In Psalm 56:3 David says “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.” Regarding fear, if you could give a piece of advice to your younger self, what would it be?

Sermon Questions

Scriptures: Psalms 90:12, Proverbs 9:10-12, Luke 23:39-43, Job 38:4-12, John 17:3, Genesis 2:25, Galatians 5:1

1. Pastor Josh asked at the beginning of the sermon, “What can we discover in the incredibly vulnerable moments on the cross?” Start first by thinking about vulnerable moments in your life. What might those moments say about you?

2. There were two criminals on the crosses beside Jesus’s cross. Read Luke 23:39-42. The criminals’ words each came from very different places – describe where each of them were coming from in their incredibly vulnerable moments. Which one approached with awe? What did that look/sound like?

3. Read Psalms 90:12 and Proverbs 9:10-12. What do these scriptures mean to you? Which criminal came to fully embrace these scriptures? Read Luke 23:43, what did that criminal gain? Read Proverbs 9:12. What did the other criminal earn?

4. As you go through this week, think about and discuss how you approach God. Do you approach Him with the mindset of “prove it” or do you approach Him with “reverence and awe”?

Serve

We’re still in need of TONS of diapers to help the large number of our neighbors facing this difficult shortage. Consider purchasing a box of any size and dropping it off at / sending it into the church.

Pray

Join us in prayer for the Impact Team. Pray over the last month of focusing our Impact efforts on Youth Wellbeing. Ask God to intervene in the lives of youth here in our community and across San Diego. Pray that our efforts are precisely postured as God is calling us and that our upcoming Good Neighbor Day on 3/16 and brand new Impact Volunteer Fair (to help further equip our partners) go smoothly.

But God will never forget the needy; the hope of the afflicted will never parish.
