Sermon Questions

1) Love protects – Share a specific relationship where you find yourself pointing out weaknesses. How can you begin to loan your strength and protect them instead?

2) Love is patient & truth telling – Share a time when you communicated something difficult to someone with grace, without talking down to them.

3) Love trusts – Has there been times where you fill in the gaps of what you don’t know about someone with your worst suspicions of them? What can you do differently in the future to trust them first?

Go Deeper

This past week, I had a friend reach out to me for comfort. She’s anxious about having another child. Instead of telling her how exciting it is or how her child is a gift (all things she knows), I just listened. In the awkward silence, I went to God’s Word. I waited for God to speak. He reminds us throughout The Bible to be still. I read these verses over her-

Exodus 14:14 “The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

Psalm 37:7 “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!”

Psalm 46:10 “He says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.’”

Psalm 62:5 “For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him.”

How often do we listen to respond? Respond only to fill the awkward silence? We know there is a difference between listening to respond and listening to listen. However, there is also an amazing and beautiful difference when we listen to allow God to speak. I’m far from a Bible scholar… but God perfectly guided me to His Word to comfort a friend. I encourage you: listen to allow God space to speak to you and through you.
