Sermon Notes

HIS-STORY: The Bible in 18 Weeks

Volume I: The Old Testament Story

Chapter 5: The Beginning Monarchs: Samuel, Saul and David

I and II Samuel: Continuing the history of God’s relationship with His people

I Samuel:
Elkanah, Hannah and Eli Eli and Samuel
Samuel and Saul
Saul and David
David and Jonathan

II Samuel:
David, Bathsheba and Nathan David and Absalom

Takeaway:

God is far less interested in our outward appearance as He is in the condition of our heart. And while we will still fail and fall short of His standard, God is in the business of using ordinary, broken people to do extraordinary things.

Study/Discussion Questions:

  1. What are the central themes of this section? What did you learn from this teaching about Israel, Samuel, Saul and David? Was there anything is this teaching that challenged you as a Christ-follower?

  2. Read Hannah’s prayer in 1 Samuel 2:1-10 and David’s prayer in 2 Samuel 7:18-29. What common themes do you see? What can we learn from these prayers... how do they help us to know how to pray?

  3. Read 1 Samuel 8. Why does Israel ask for a king? Why do we seek to have people in authority over us? What are the positives? What are the negatives?

  4. How would you define David as a person and as a leader? Was David a good leader? What does it mean to be a “man after God’s own heart (1 Samuel 13:14)? What qualities are necessary for good leadership today?
